Will "David's Sling" Stop Hezbollah?

Will "David's Sling" Stop Hezbollah?

Most friends of Israel have heard of the tiny nation’s missile shield called the “Iron Dome.” It is the sophisticated defense against short-range missiles that was remarkably effective back in the summer of 2014 when terrorist cells in Gaza fired hundreds of rockets toward civilian areas in Israel.

All but a few of the lethal projectiles were intercepted and destroyed before they could inflict casualties. The Iron Dome system likely saved thousands of lives, however, it is only designed to be effective against short-range missiles, like the ones fired from nearby Gaza.

That’s why the Israeli Air Force took delivery this week of the first elements in a new system designed to provide another layer of protection for Israel’s citizens—this one defending against intermediate-range missiles such as those that might be fired from war-torn Syria.

The name for this new system? “David’s Sling.”

An Israeli Defense Force spokesman said, “David’s Sling will allow Israel to more effectively defend against the wide range of current and future threats to its civilians.”

The name may be prophetically appropriate. In the days ahead Israel may be facing some giants as both Russia and Iran become more militarily entrenched in bordering Syria and supportive of the terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon at Israel’s northern border.

Israel has already intercepted several shipments of advanced weapons and missile components headed for Hezbollah from Iran.

These developments serve as stark reminders of why Israel must remain vigilant and assertive in defending herself. Even so, many in the media and at the highest levels of government continue to portray Israel as the primary obstacle to peace and harmony in the Middle East.
