Damascus, Syria— a mere 133 miles north of Tel Aviv—is about to play host to a major forward base for the Russian air force. According to an Israel-based news service, fighter pilots from Russia are expected to begin arriving in Syria in the coming days, and will fly their Russian air force fighter jets and attack helicopters against ISIS and rebel-aligned targets within the failing state.

Russia has been a long-time backer of the Assad regime in Syria. As the news report revealed:
“According to Western diplomats, a Russian expeditionary force has already arrived in Syria and set up camp in an Assad-controlled airbase. The base is said to be in area surrounding Damascus, and will serve, for all intents and purposes, as a Russian forward operating base.”
In the coming weeks, thousands more Russian military personnel are set to touch down in Syria, including advisors, instructors, logistics personnel, technical personnel, members of the aerial protection division, and the pilots who will operate the aircraft.
Reports also indicate that Russia is coordinating its military activity in Syria with Iran. Russia already exercises control of a major naval base on Syria’s coast.
For the time being, the purpose of all this Russian military in Syria is to bolster the brutal Assad regime against attacks from the even more barbaric ISIS forces seeking to overthrow it. But those who understand Bible prophecy will find the presence of the Russian Bear on Israel’s doorstep significant.
