The joyous eight-day festival of Chanukah commemorates the victory of the Jewish freedom fighters, the Maccabees, over the Syrian army in 165 B.C. and the subsequent miraculous reconsecration of the holy Temple in Jerusalem. This Jewish holiday is mentioned in the New Covenant in John 10:22. Today it is celebrated with the lighting of a special candelabrum known as a Chanukiah, eating special foods, singing songs and playing games.
